I once had a dear old mother.

Hi,
I'm not sure if that is the actual title to the song lyrics I'm looking for. It's a song I used to sing as a young child in the late 60's early 70's. I don't remember all the lyrics, the song is about the love between a mother and daughter and how you should cherish that love because you won't miss it until she has gone beyond the grave. The beginning of the song goes like this......

I once had a dear old mother and she was kind to me
one night as a lay sleeping upon my feather bed an angel came
from heaven to tell me mum was dead, she told me not to worry......and thats all I can remember!

I would be so grateful if someone could help me.
Thank you, Mary xx

Hi Mary,

I found this on another site. Hope it helps you a little.

Pete

Mother

I once had a dear old mother, who thought the world of me
and if i got into trouble she`d sit me on her knee
one night while i was sleeping upon my feather bed
an angel came and told me that my poor mum was dead

The next morning i got up early to see if it was true
my mum had gone to heaven where all the sky's are blue
so if you have a mother please do as your told
cause if you lose your mother you lose a heart of gold

you lose a heart of gold...

Pete

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me, I really do appreciate it.

The words are very similar to what I remember of the song.

Thank you once again.

My dad used to sing this song all the time, but the last verse is different from what I've read online.

So children, obey your parents
No matter how large or small
For when you lose your parents
You're losing your best friend of all

It always brought me to tears....

The version i know, is rather similar:

I once had a dear old mother, who was very kind to me
when ever I was in trouble, she sat me on her knee.
One night while I was sleeping, upon my feather bed
an Angel came from heaven, and said, my Mum was dead.

I woke up in the morning, too see if it was true
yes, Mum had gone to Heaven, and the dear old skies were blue.

So, children obey your parents, and do as you are told
for when you lose your Mother,
you lose your heart of gold.

That is what i can remember! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hello Mary

Am new to this site and have just come across your query. This is how I remember the song:

I once had a dear old mother
Who was very good to me
and when I was in trouble
She sat me on her knee

One night as I lay sleeping
Upon my feather bed
An angel came from heaven
And told me mum was dead

Now all you children listen
And do as you are told
Cause if you lose your mother
You lose a heart of gold

Hopes this helps Mary - can't remember the rest as it is a song I havent heard of or thought about for years!!

Sally
