please help me find this song

Hi everyone - I'm totally new to this board but would be forever grateful if anyone recognises this song - I'm sure it was an Irish folksong but I may be wrong - ther lyrics were something like this....

..................................................................................
Well it dont seem right to say goodnight to you
But the time has come we have to say we do
Well you came to us as strangers, we're leaving you as friends
Ain't it funny how the godimes always end
And although it dont seem right, it just remains to say goodnight to you.

And as the stars go out we may even doubt if we were ever here,
So goodnight, dont hold a candle to the wind

...........................................................................................

And that's about all I remember of it - and I would so like to know what it was called and who sang it as it holds very dear memories for me.

Thanks for reading this !

Pete
