If you should ask me where I've been
In the times so long gone by
I would have to say to you
"Chasing rainbows in the sky"
But the rainbow has no ending
And it shines on every shore
It goes from nowhere to nowhere
You could follow it forever more

If you should ask me what I've seen
On the earth or sea or sky
I would have to say to you
"I've seen time go rushing by"
Ah, but time is no man's fortune
You can't hold it in your hand
It will run right out through your fingers
Just like little grains of golden sand

If you should ask me where I'm bound
On my never ending quest
I would have to say to you
"Maybe east and maybe west"
You must cross the deepest valley
You must climb the highest hill
For the world, it keeps on a turning
And time just won't stand still
